IBeacon : An important element in the Enterprise Mobility
In this high-stake world of technology, comes a new tool called iBeacon which will make your app irresistible and interactive.
So what is iBeacon?
Beacons are essentially, small, cheap Bluetooth transmitters. The Apps installed on your mobile device listens out for the signal transmitted by these beacons and notifies the user accordingly when the phone comes into range. An iBeacon has the ability to cypher when the user has entered, exited or lingered in the region.
- iBeacons are compatible with all iOS devices: iPhone 4S and later, iPad(3rd generation and later) ,iPod Touch(5th generation), iPad Mini(1st generation and later)
- Mac computers with OS X Mavericks
- Android 4.3+ (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S3/S4/S4 Mini, Samsung Galaxy Note 2/3, HTC One, Google/LG Nexus 7 2013 version/Nexus 4/Nexus 5, HTC Butterfly, OnePlus One)
- Windows phone devices with Lumia Cyan update.
How does iBeacon work?
With an iBeacon network, any brand, app, retailer, or platform will be able to understand exactly where a customer is in the brick environment. This gives them an opportunity to send customers highly contextual, meaningful messages and advertisements on their devices without using too much of the device’s battery life, which makes it more appealing than less energy-efficient GPS and wi-fi alternatives.
The typical scenario looks like this – A consumer carrying any Smartphone walks into a store. Apps installed on a consumer’s Smartphone listen for iBeacons. When an app hears an iBeacon, it communicates the relevant data to its server, which triggers notification. It could include other things like targeted advertisements, special offers, and helpful reminders as well. Other potential applications include mobile payments and shopper analytics and implementation outside of retail, at airports, concert venues, theme parks, and more. The potential is limitless.
iBeacon is extensively used in industries like airport, retail, groceries ,electronics, sports, events, education and so on.
